Varanasi Attractions Varanasi, a city located in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, well known for its temples and is popularly known as the holy city. It is enclosed by the rivers Varuna and Assi, from both sides, and has thus got its name. Varanasi is popular for its various embankments or ghats on the River Ganga. These are the centre of assorted activities, ranging from business to worship. Some of the popular ghats of Varanasi are Panchganga, Dashashwamedha, Barnasangam, Assi and Manikarnika. Varanasi is also rich in Hindu temples, ashrams, Buddhist Stupas and Jain temples. Few of the prominent Hindu temples, that must be visited, while
touring Varanasi, include the Durga temple, Sankat Mochan temple, Vishwanath temple, Tulsi Manas temple and Bharat Mata temple.

Other popular attractions of Varanasi are the Benaras Hindu University (BHU), Jantar Mantar, Bharat Kala Bhavan and Ramnagar Fort.

Banaras Hindu University, or BHU, is a world popular known University, founded by the great nationalist leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, in the year 1916. Since independence, it has become India’s greatest centers of learning, and has contributed to the progress of the nation by providing a large number of renowned scholars, artists and scientists.

Bharat Kala Bhavan, situated in the campus of BHU campus, is an art-and-architecture museum, possessing a rich collection of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures, paintings, souvenirs and archeological remains.
 
Jantar Mantar, an observatory built by Jaipur’s Maharaja Jai Singh, was used to find the local time, declination of the Sun, the stars and planets, and eclipses. There are many masonry instruments to record the same, as the Krantivritta Yantra, Samrat Yantra, Digansha Yantra, Prakash Yantra, Ram Yantra, Dhruva Yantra and Disha Yantra.

Ramnagar Fort, on the opposite bank of the River Ganga, is, about 14 km from Varanasi, and was the ancestral home of the Maharaja of Banaras. Built from red sandstone, the architecture of the fort is worth seeing, and so are the several famous building located inside.
